Sodium sulfide is a chemical compound with the formula Na2S, or more commonly its hydrated form Na2S•9H2O. Both forms are colorless, water-soluble salts that form very strong alkaline solutions. Sodium sulfide and its hydrates, when exposed to moisture in the air, release hydrogen sulfide gas, which has a rotten egg odor. Some industrial samples exist as sodium sulfide polyhydrate (Na2S•xH2O) with a specific weight percent sodium sulfide. Common samples usually contain about 60 weight percent sodium sulfide (Na2S•3H2O). Such samples have a relatively yellow appearance due to the presence of polysulfides; these samples are known as "sodium sulfide shells". Although these samples are yellow, they are colorless in solution.
